Hi. I have the option of buying either of these two,
and will buy one or the other based on results here.

I haven't had an opportunity to try either out but the
awesome reviews both here and harmony central are
enough to quell my fear of throwing money at either, sight unseen.
I'm just having trouble making a decision either way.
I guess I just wanna know if they're similar in any way, and other peoples experience with them.

By the way, i play a 72 deluxe tele into a 2x12 hot rod deville w/ V-30's, and play stuff like garage/punk.

Cheers in advance

I would go for the OCD; the OCD is a little more versatile pedal then the Hotcake

A hotcake is mainly a D+ without the diodes; you can hear its best work at the first Dire Straits albums. It is mainly a boost

The OCD will add some more flavour to the signal and will do more then just boost. Also, it will sound OK on high gain settings, something I could not say about the Hotcake

Tijd zat..., toch?

OCD is more of a standard overdrive pedal. Something you would expect in the Tube Screamer and such.

The Hot Cake is a fuzzier sounding pedal. Voiced almost like a higher gain fuzz face. You can dial it in to sound like a Cornish G2 as well.

Personally, I would say you would want both!

I have a Hot Cake coming to me and a TS808 already on my board. I'll be using both.

Man, I got so many distortion/fuzz pedals! My rig will be Hot Cake, Muff, Tube Screamer *changing to a Timmy whenever mine is available*, and a BK Butler Tube Driver... maybe I am an addict? Also have a Pro Analog Power Driver on it now, but that is a boost and not really a fuzz.

So, can I take the diodes out of a D+ and have a poor man's Hotcake? Also, a hotcake for a guy who has two D+?

I agree with ZN on this. The Hot Cake can give you a fairly clean boost without the mid-frequency hump you see in Tube Screamers, but it also gets more teeth than a TS as you push the drive past, say, 2:00. It still doesn't take the place of a fuzz face, however.

care to elaborate? i'm guessing the pedal isn't incredibly complex and could be fixed by one of the many pedal gurus on the unholy interwebz.. if not by yourself with proper guidance...

Yes, a very poor man's Hotcake :)

They used different opamps...... and the design haven't changed that much during the years, only components and brands.......

I would argue this. with my sunn head i was able to pull way more useable tones out of the hotcake then i could a ocd. the ocd is just so amp dependent.

No one has to be alright all of the time.

Well said.

The Hotcake is a different take on the 'dirt box' in my opinion. The OCD is very amp dependant and no where the same as a TS9-like OD.
