It seems to me that it would be particularly useful to try to consolidate "what did artist A use on song/album B?" threads to one. And also because I have such a question and would like to contribute more than just another question.

I want to know how Matt Bellamy got the sound at the intro of "Map of the Problematique". It bugs me every time I hear the song. Part of me thinks it's just two-handed tapping with some studio trickery to make it sound more staccato.

It's a Zvex seek wah I think, or one of the line 6 modelled versions. He's just playing chords with the effect on in live videos.

The bit in Just is a wierd one, I thought it might be the whammy glitching out as he holds the note on and it feedbacks, but I don't have one myself so I can't try it.

I think that's the result of over-enthusiastic string scraping with the side of your hand combined with some use of the whammy pedal.

I'm quite keen on working out what guitar effect Ride use on the intro of 0X4 on "Going Blank Again".

Just to add you can hear the same effect on the coda at the end of "Carry That Weight" by the Beatles. The guy from Mansun also used it on a few songs. Totally perplexing!

I think the Problematique intro sound is comprised of a lot of chords coming in on different beats in different octaves with the attack edited off on all beats apart from the first. A definate studio job if you ask me...

...which also leads me to believe Matt mimes it live. They always have lots of prerecorded tracks sync'd up to click and I'm sorry to say I think this is just another. It really hurts to think it, even more to say it, but I believe it is sadly the case.

Those chords run under other playing on top in live videos which mean either it's a pre-record or he loops it. If it is a live loop I'd guess at the Line6 Delay Modeller for processing that tone.

Hmmmm.... so I guess a Whammy Pedal is involved. I don't own one so I can't find out :(

Great, now another pedal to add to the want list.

I can say that on every bootleg I've got Jonny uses the WH-1 in combo w/pick scraping on Just.

Matt wasn't even miming the "Map of the Problematic" part live either of the times I've seen them on the last tour. He plays the clean arpeggios when they come in. From what I saw of his rack I didn't notice any of th Z Vex pedals, however from seeing them play it live, I jsut assumed their additional guy sampled the effected guitar in question from the album, and plays it.

I begin to defend

I looked it up on youtube, and in this video it definately doesnt sound clean enough to be prerecorded.

My first thought was its some kind of S/H filter like a seekwah or the type you get in digital programs like guitar rig. But then I realised, Matt has midi pickups in his guitars I think? I'm sure I've seen them on at least some of his customised mansons. And If this guy

Can play it on a keyboard, all Matt needs is a similar patch and some distortion to play it live. Also, they have a keyboarist these days so they rely less on backing tracks. You dont see him because the camera never focuses on him but at Reading there was definately a dude with keyboards next to the drum kit. Not exactly hidden just not drawing attention to himself.

Also, its definately not played like this.
