So I'm sitting around enjoying a kitschy St. Patrick's Day, chilling out listening to anything remotely "Irish" that I happen to have, and I notice something.
Both "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" by Dropkick Murphys and "Glasgow Kiss" by John Petrucci sound distinctively Celtic to me. Moreover, they both sound like drinking songs. Seems like it's all due to a common rhythm/lead interplay. Like the way the rhythm section plays big, dramatic, halting rests in the intro to both, or the "needly" quality of the lead banjo and electric guitar, respectively.
So yeah... in honor of auld Saint Patty's, what's the Technique & Theory trick to writing a Celtic folk tune/Irish drinking song?
